On June 27, Helen Keller’s birthday is celebrated worldwide with the Day of Deafblindness. In Switzerland with the action “At the Table!” of SZBLIND, Taubblindenhilfe, Action Fondation Romande SourdAveugles and Tanne together with 58 restaurants all over Switzerland.
Eating is a social activity for us humans, a pleasure where we taste, smell, feel. They say the eye eats with us – but the ear is also intensely involved in eating. Especially when we eat in community. People with deafblindness are present when eating together, yet often alone and isolated.
“At the Table! With deafblindness” draws attention to the social participation of people with deafblindness. In the participating restaurants, placemats are available that invite guests to have a personal experience. A pair of glasses is stamped into the placemat, simulating a severe visual impairment. Hearing protection can be requested from the staff so that a hearing impairment can be simulated.
Of course, our Café Tanne is also taking part. And you? With or without personal experience you are very welcome. With this you support the participation of people with deafblindness. Thank you very much and hope to see you soon!
